Tasmanian Gold Card concessions: the full list for veterans

Veterans in Tasmania often ask whether living in the state changes their claim. The honest answer is the same one we give everywhere: your main claims are federal and work the same across the country, but a few things genuinely change at the Tasmanian border, and the state has a notable history on first responder PTSD. Here is what stays the same, and what is different.

What does not change: your DVA, CSC and TPD claims

Your core claims are federal. They are governed by national law and administered the same way whether you live in Hobart, Launceston, Devonport or Burnie:

  • DVA compensation runs under Commonwealth legislation, and from 1 July 2026 new claims are handled under a single improved MRCA following the VETS Act reforms. Your postcode does not change your entitlement.
  • Commonwealth Super (CSC) invalidity claims across DFRDB, MSBS and ADF Cover are a national scheme with identical rules in every state.
  • TPD claims depend on your superannuation fund and policy, not your state. Many Tasmanian veterans hold default TPD cover through later civilian work without realising it.

What does change in Tasmania

Three areas are genuinely state-based, and Tasmania has its own rules for each.

1. First responder PTSD, where Tasmania led

If you moved from the ADF into emergency services, your first responder injuries are covered by the Tasmanian workers’ compensation scheme, not DVA. Tasmania was the first jurisdiction in Australia to introduce presumptive PTSD cover, and its scheme has been unusually broad. It is currently under review, so current advice matters. We explain it in our guide to Tasmanian first responder compensation.

2. Gold Card concessions

Your Gold Card is a federal entitlement, but the concessions attached to it are set by the state. Tasmania offers free Metro travel for TPI and EDA holders, a motor tax rebate for TPI veterans, a council rates remission and a TasWater rebate, though its electricity concession requires a Pensioner Concession Card, not the Gold Card alone. We cover the detail in our guide to Tasmanian Gold Card concessions.

3. Abuse claim limitation law

Claims for historical abuse are governed by state limitation law. Tasmania has removed the time limits that once blocked historical child abuse claims, which means claims can proceed even where the abuse occurred many years ago. The position differs between states, so where the abuse occurred and which state’s law applies both matter.

Why this matters when you choose who to work with

Because the core claims are federal, you do not need a lawyer physically in your town, you need one who runs these claims well and knows the Tasmanian-specific pieces that do apply. KSC Law acts for veterans and first responders right across Tasmania, from Hobart and Anglesea Barracks to Launceston, Devonport and Burnie, online and by phone. TPD Claims

Could you have a TPD claim?

Total and Permanent Disability cover is held inside most super funds. Answer a few quick questions to see if you may be able to claim. This is a guide only, not a determination.

This is a general guide only, not an assessment of your policy or eligibility. TPD outcomes depend on your individual super fund or insurance policy terms. This does not constitute legal, financial or medical advice. Book a free consultation for a personalised assessment.
