DVA Points System

Working out where you sit on the DVA impairment points table can feel opaque. This guide explains the DVA impairment points table and how DVA assesses your impairment rating under the MRCA.

At KSC Law, our expert team helps veterans understand their impairment rating and secure the entitlements they have earned through their service. Use the calculator below to estimate your figure, then read on for how the system works.

Estimate your permanent impairment lump sum based on your DVA impairment points, service type, age and gender. Estimates use current DVA MRCA rates.

The system assesses Permanent Impairment (PI) compensation under the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004 (MRCA). It assigns points based on the severity of service-related injuries or illnesses to determine eligibility for lump sums or ongoing payments.

To qualify for PI compensation:

  • Conditions must link to ADF service after 1 July 2004.
  • A medical assessment must confirm the impairment is permanent.
  • To initially be paid compensation, you need to be awarded 10 or more points. After that, increases are assessed in 5-point steps.

Uses points (0-100) to assess injury impact on daily life.Assesses work incapacity (no points system).
Initial assessment requires 10+ impairment points for payment.Requires total inability to work due to service conditions.
Offers lump sums, periodic payments, or both.Provides tax-free, ongoing payments.

Key factors include:

  • Medical evidence: diagnosis, prognosis, and specialist reports.
  • Work capacity: employment limitations caused by the condition.
  • Daily life impact: mobility, self-care, and lifestyle restrictions.
  • Treatment needs: ongoing therapy or rehabilitation requirements.

The DVA points table assigns points based on the severity of impairment and the type of service (warlike/non-warlike or peacetime). The figures below are based on current DVA MRCA rates as of 1 July 2024.

Note: the DVA points table considers the type of service when calculating payments. Warlike / non-warlike service results in higher compensation at the lower points scales compared to peacetime service, however at the higher thresholds such as 80 points it levels out to be the same.

Veterans entitled to Permanent Impairment compensation can choose to receive payments as:

  • Fortnightly periodic payments
  • A lump sum
  • A combination of both

Once a lump sum is chosen, the decision cannot be reversed. Veterans are encouraged to seek financial advice before making a decision.

If a veteran’s condition worsens, they can request a reassessment to increase their Permanent Impairment (PI) compensation. A new evaluation is possible if their impairment rating increases by at least 5 points, with additional compensation available for those reaching 80 or more impairment points.
