Losing a loved one is an immensely difficult time, and planning a funeral can add to the burden. For veterans’ families, knowing what funeral support is available can ease some of the financial pressure.
The Department of Veterans’ Affairs may contribute to funeral expenses for eligible veterans. Entitlements vary with the nature of service and the card held. For the wider picture of card benefits, see our DVA Gold Card guide and our DVA card eligibility page.

- What it helps with: a contribution towards costs such as the coffin, transport of remains and funeral director fees.
- Funeral Benefit Scheme: a one-off contribution where death relates to a recognised condition (a set maximum applies, subject to change).
- Usually you apply: it is generally not automatic, though some cases are granted automatically.
- Families too: some war widows, widowers and dependants may receive bereavement support.
What are DVA funeral benefits?
DVA funeral benefits provide financial assistance towards the funeral costs of eligible veterans, recognising their service by easing some of the pressure of arranging a funeral. They can contribute towards costs such as the coffin, transport of remains and professional funeral director fees, so families can focus on commemorating their loved one rather than mounting expenses.
DVA Gold Card funeral entitlements
For Gold Card holders, eligibility depends on factors including service history. If a veteran passes away from a war-related injury or a condition recognised by DVA, they may qualify under the Funeral Benefit Scheme, a one-off contribution towards funeral expenses up to a set maximum. That amount is subject to legislative change, so families should confirm the current rate with DVA. The benefit is usually not automatic and must be applied for, with one exception below.
Funeral benefits are granted automatically, without an application, for Australian veterans who were prisoners of war, or who received:
- Disability Compensation Payment at the Special (TPI) rate
- Disability Compensation Payment with an allowance as a multiple amputee
- The Extreme Disablement Adjustment (EDA) rate of the Disability Compensation Payment
What funeral costs may be covered?
Depending on the circumstances, DVA may contribute towards burial or cremation services, funeral director fees, and the transport of remains. Coverage amounts depend on an individual assessment of the veteran’s service and the arrangements made, so it is worth contacting DVA or seeking assistance to confirm the exact entitlement.
Does DVA cover funerals for war widows or partners?
DVA recognises that a veteran’s passing affects the whole family. Certain provisions allow war widows, widowers and dependants to receive assistance, generally based on the veteran’s service and benefits at the time of death. Families may receive bereavement payments or tailored support for the surviving partner.
How to claim DVA funeral assistance
- Complete the Funeral Benefit claim form, which collects details of the veteran and the expenses incurred.
- Submit the required documentation, including the death certificate, service details and supporting records of funeral costs.
- Await assessment and reimbursement, noting timeframes can vary.
- Apply as soon as practical, as prompt lodgement helps avoid added delay.
