Your service deserves experienced support.
If an injury or illness may be related to your service, you may be entitled to treatment, support and compensation through DVA.
Our veteran-founded team has managed thousands of DVA matters. We build the evidence, manage the process and keep you informed at every stage.
Types of DVA compensation and support
Once DVA accepts that an injury or condition is related to your service, different compensation and support may become available.
What applies depends on your accepted conditions, how they affect your work and daily life, and the eligibility requirements for each entitlement. More than one may be relevant to you.
Permanent Impairment compensation
Permanent Impairment compensation is a tax-free payment for the lasting effects of accepted service-related conditions.
DVA assesses your degree of impairment and its effect on your lifestyle when determining the compensation payable. Depending on your circumstances, payment may be made periodically or converted wholly or partly into a lump sum.
Incapacity payments
Incapacity payments may be available when accepted service-related conditions reduce your ability to work or earn.
These payments compensate for economic loss and are generally paid fortnightly. The amount can depend on your pre-injury earnings, current earnings, capacity for work and any applicable superannuation or other offsets. Incapacity and Permanent Impairment compensation address different effects of your conditions, so you may be eligible for both.
Additional payment for severe impairment
An additional tax-free lump sum may be available where a veteran is assessed at 80 or more impairment points and has a dependant who is also an eligible young person.
The payment applies for each eligible young person and may be paid to the person or people with primary responsibility for their care. Specific dependency, timing and eligibility requirements apply.
Compensation following death
Compensation and support may be available to eligible partners, young people and other dependants following a veteran’s death.
Depending on the circumstances, this may include lump-sum or periodic compensation, bereavement payments, funeral assistance, treatment eligibility and education support. Eligibility depends on the circumstances of the death and the person’s relationship with and dependency on the veteran.
Other DVA support
Accepted service-related conditions may also give you access to treatment, rehabilitation and practical assistance with daily life.
Other support may include household services, attendant care, travel for treatment, Veteran Cards, the Special Rate Disability Pension and the Additional Disablement Amount. What is available depends on your accepted conditions, assessed needs and circumstances.
These are some of the main forms of DVA compensation and support, but they are not an exhaustive list. KSC Law can review your accepted conditions and circumstances and explain which entitlements may apply.
